a short story

Buddy Feathers was a little man with short arms and short legs and little feet. But being small was not a problem for him. In fact, his smallness was useful in his profession as a burglar. He could squeeze in and out of basement windows with ease where a taller man would likely be stuck. And it was easy for him to disappear in a crowd if he were being chased.

Just because he was small did not mean he was not strong. In fact, he was quite a strong man. Buddy worked out with weights every day. His hands were like vice grips. His shoulders were powerful, too. Many a cocky opponent had underestimated Buddy in a fight and paid the consequences.

Buddy did not become angry very often. In fact, he had a pleasant personality and was quite a card. His friends at the White House Bar liked to hear his jokes and funny stories. And he knew how to take a joke, too, if it was told in fun and not in malice.

None of Buddy’s friends knew what he did for a living. Most of them believed that he had inherited money from a relative and only had to work occasionally to supplement his trust fund.

In fact, from time to time Buddy loaned his friends money…twenty dollars here, fifty dollars there…and most of them paid him back in a reasonable amount of time.
