This was back in the day before there were SKU guns. Checkers did not know where obscure items in the store were or even whether the store carried it and they would have shown a customer where to find something they knew the location of, but they were expected to remain at the checkstand and not hunt all over the store for an item for one customer while making six others wait in line due to a shortage of one checker.
